چکیده

In the studies of radiological assessment, 137Cs is the most important radioactive contaminant, produced from the atmospheric bomb tests, discharges from nuclear reprocessing plants and the Chernobyl reactor accident. The systems most commonly used for the in situ monitoring of γ-radiation in seawater, are based on NaI(Tl) detectors, which are characterized by high detection efficiency and low cost [1-3]. They have, however, the disadvantage of relatively poor energy resolution and high background mainly originating from the Compton effect during the detection process of the high energy γ-rays from the deexcitation of natural radionuclides, such as 40K and 214Bi [4]. This makes the systems incapable for precise peak identification of the various gamma ray contributions, especially for low level radioactivity studies and in the low energy region, where the 661keV γ-ray of 137Cs, is situated in the spectra.

Monte Carlo simulation of gamma-ray spectra from natural radionuclides recorded by a NaI detector in the marine environment.

The GEANT4 Monte Carlo code has been used to simulate gamma-ray spectra of natural radionuclides collected by a NaI scintillation detector immersed in seawater. The gamma-rays emitted from the decay of (40)K, and the series of (232)Th and (238)U, were used to describe the radioactive water source around the NaI crystal. The simulated gamma-ray spectra were compared with real data recorded in si...

Unfolding X-ray spectrum in the diagnostic range using the Monte Carlo Code MCNP5

Introduction: Unfolding X-ray spectrum is a powerful tool for quality control of X-ray tubes. Generally, the acquisition of the X-ray spectrum in diagnostic radiology departments is complicated and difficult due to high photon flux. Measurement of x ray spectra using radiation detectors could not be performed accurately, because of the pulse pile up. Therefore, indirect methods...

Study on effect of detector type in estimating buildup factor of gamma-rays by monte carlo simulation based on variance reduction

This paper presents the study on the effect of detector type in estimating gamma rays buildup factor. In this regard, the flux buildup factors of gamma rays emitted by an isotropic point 60Co source in mean energy 1.253 MeV was evaluated after passing through the Pb, W, Zn, and Ti sample in thickness of 1-5 cm by MCNPX. Four common detector types in simulation of measurement was defined to esti...

Assessment of X-Ray Crosstalk in a Computed Tomography Scanner with Small Detector Elements Using Monte Carlo Method

Introduction: Crosstalk is a leakage of X-ray or light produced in a matrix of X-ray detectors or array of photodiodes in one element to other elements affecting on image contrast and spatial resolution. In this study, we assessed X-ray crosstalk in a computed tomography (CT) scanner with small detector elements to estimate the effect of various parameters such as X-ray tube voltage, detector e...

Determination of marine gamma activity and study of the minimum detectable activity (MDA) in 4pi geometry based on Monte Carlo simulation.

Monte Carlo simulations were performed using the GEANT4 code for the investigation of gamma-ray absorption in water in different spherical geometries and of the efficiency of a NaI(Tl) detector for different radionuclides in the aquatic environment. In order to test the reliability of these simulations, experimental values of the NaI(Tl) detector efficiency were deduced and seem to be in good a...
